"Curate" Homeschool - what's up with the name?

Definition of Curate:

1. noun: a minister with pastoral responsibility

2. verb: to select the best or most appropriate, especially for presentation, distribution, or publication

Every day I serve as a curate. I am a pastor in my church. The etymology of the word "curate" comes from the Medieval Latin curatus which means one who is charged with the care of souls. I think that in fact all parents serve as a curate in their own homes. But vocationally, that is something I strive to do for a specific community in south Austin.

Speaking of the home, I also serve every day as a homeschool curate. I select what my children read, learn, and are exposed to. Charlotte Mason, the 19th century educational icon I look up to, referred to education as a feast. I want to expose my children to the best works and thoughts and ideas. A big part of my job as their teacher is to help them become friends with the good, beautiful, and true.

So ... "curate homeschool" seemed to be a wonderful description and fit! It pays homage to the two big parts of my life in this season. I ask God to help me fulfill the calling of both.
